چکیده

the broader category of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is characterized by a chronic, predominantly irreversible reduction in maximal airflow velocity. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, and to a lesser extent bronchiectasis comprise the majority of COPD (Figure 1). Chronic bronchitis is a disease process identified clinically as the presence of a productive cough on most days of the month for 3 months over 2 consecutive years. It occurs in the absence of other causes of chronic cough such as tuberculosis or lung cancer. An acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB) is a distinct event superimposed on chronic bronchitis and is characterized by a period of unstable lung function with worsening airflow and other symptoms. The average number of episodes of AECB per year is reported to range from 1.5 to 3.

Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and antibiotics: what studies are still needed?

The use of antibiotics in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECBs) remains the subject of controversy despite considerable medical and socioeconomic implications. First, the contribution of bacterial infection to AECBs is difficult to assess in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who are chronically colonized with respiratory pathogens. In addition, several studi...

The economic impact of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in the United States and Canada: a literature review.

BACKGROUND Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB) are recurrent and potentially severe medical events for the 13 million people in the United States who have chronic bronchitis. Medical resource use associated with AECB can have a substantial economic impact on the patients, health care system, and society overall. Serum, saliva, and sputum levels of metronidazole in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

We have evaluated the absorption and the penetration of metronidazole into the bronchial secretions and saliva in acute infective exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Seventeen patients were given 400 mg orally three times daily for seven days and "steady state" levels were measured in serum, saliva, and sputum on the last day of treatment. Mean levels in the three biological fluids were not si...

Pharmacoeconomic evaluation of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and COPD.

BACKGROUND Although exacerbations are the main cause of medical visits and hospitalizations of patients with chronic bronchitis and COPD, little information is available on the costs of their management. OBJECTIVE This study attempted to determine the total direct costs derived from the management of exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and COPD in an ambulatory setting. METHOD A total of 2,...
